BSc Horticulture is a four year undergraduate course that is divided into eight semesters. This course deals with the cultivation of seeds, vegetables, plants, flowers, herbs, fruits, shrubs, gardens, maintaining nurseries, green houses etc. This branch of study also covers plant diseases, growth and genetics.

This course teaches about all the aspects of a plant, from a seed to a fully grown plant. The scientific knowledge imparted during this course helps to enhance the growth and productivity of the plants. The course has many aspects borrowed from Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry, Genetic Engineering etc. There is a huge demand for this course as the market needs quality food at reasonable prices and skilled horticulturists for the growth and development in this field.

Candidates having keen interest in this field can take admission directly or by qualifying entrance exam. He/she must have scored minimum 45% in 10+2 with English and PCM/PCB.

There are numerous job opportunities available for the graduates to build their career. Jobs are available in both private sector and public sector, domestically and internationally.

  • The compulsory subjects in 10+2 are Physics, chemistry and biology/mathematics.
  • The minimum age for admission is 17years and upper age limit for pursuing this course 35 years.

This field has vast scope as the field is expanding and the need for horticulturists is arising. Due to expansion of technology, horticulturists are now required in several other fields too. For example, genetic engineering has advanced horticultural technology which makes production possible in the area where it was not possible before. Horticulturists are now invited to work in the food industry and in the production of agricultural equipment.

In the Government sector, the graduates can be recruited as officers in the State Forestry Departments, State Agriculture Departments, Boards like Spice or Coir or Rubber boards etc.
