General Nursing and Midwifery or GNM is a three and a half year diploma course that can be pursued by the students, willing to make their career in clinical nursing. Nursing is an important part of the health care system which promotes mental health and prevention of illness. This course focuses on subjects such as anatomy and physiology, midwifery and gynecological nursing. During this course, students learn to deal with patients and assist doctors and help them develop skills to work efficiently in a hospital environment and provide first aid, blood pressure monitoring, etc.

Candidates interested in taking admission must have passed 10+2 with a minimum of 45% from a recognized board with Science/Commerce/Arts any stream and English as compulsory subject. Candidates passed from State Open School recognized by the State Government and National Institute of Open School (NIOS) recognized by Central Government are also eligible to pursue this course.

After completing GNM, individuals can work in Private as well as Public hospitals or organization. Besides this, GNM diploma holders can also pursue higher education which is BSc Nursing from any recognized university.

The General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) eligibility criteria is mentioned below :

• • Candidates must have acquired a minimum of 45% in 10+2.
  • The compulsory subjects in 10+2 must be English, PCM/PCB/ARTS/COMMERECE.
  • The minimum age for taking admission is 17years and upper age limit for pursuing this course 35 years.

Nursing is full-time occupation and candidates after completing GNM, are offered jobs in medical department as they acquire the required skills and education in this field. They find job at hospitals, clinics, health departments or can work as a private health care-taker also. GNM diploma holders can also work as community helpers and can work for NGOs that spread medical awareness. Diploma holders can either find jobs or can pursue B.Sc Nursing willingly.
