BSc Optometry is a four year undergraduate course that is pursued after the completion of 10+2. This course focuses on the concepts of eye diagnosis and treatment. A person who treats eye diseases or performs eye operations is called an optometrist.
Some students are always confused about the admission criteria of this course. Let me make it clear to you that if a student wants to take admission then he/she must have passed 10+2 with a minimum of 50% in Science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Mathematics). Admission can be taken on merit basis or by qualifying an entrance exam conducted by the university or college itself.
The most important question that arises in a student’s mind is- Is NEET required for BSc Optometry? The answer to this question is – Definitely not!
National Eligibility and Entrance Exam (NEET) is held every year for students who wish to pursue MBBS, BDS or other medical and paramedical exams. Students qualifying this exam secure their position in some government and private colleges where they have to pay lesser fee as compared to the students who take admission on merit basis. But it does not mean that a student needs to qualify NEET if he/she wants to take admission in BSc Optometry. He/she can pursue this course on the basis of marks obtained in 10+2 or by qualifying an entrance exam held by the University itself.
A student has to submit his/her documents for verification to take admission in the college. Documents such as:-
- Mark sheet and pass certificate of Class X or XII examination.
- Proof of date of birth.
- School leaving certificate
- Transfer certificate
- Domicile certificate/ residential proof or certificate
- Provisional certificate
- Character certificate
- Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe/Other Backward Caste certificates
- Proof of disability (if any)
- Migration Certificate
Thus, it is very obvious to say that NEET is not required to take admission in BSc Optometry although qualifying NEET might prove advantageous for a student.
